Health Care Loan Forgiveness Programs

NURSE Corps Loan Repayment Program
(Formerly the Federal Nursing Education Loan Repayment Program)

This federally-funded program provides registered nurse loan recipients with loan forgiveness of up to 60% of their qualifying loan balance in exchange for two years of service at a critical shortage facility.

Iowa Registered Nurse and Nurse Educator Loan Forgiveness Program

This loan repayment assistance program serves registered nurses employed in Iowa and nurse educators teaching at eligible Iowa college and universities.

Rural Iowa Advanced RN Practitioner and PA Loan Repayment Program

This program provides a loan repayment incentive to advanced registered nurse and physician assistant students enrolled at eligible Iowa colleges and universities who agree to practice in a rural service commitment area in Iowa for five consecutive years.

Iowa Student Loan

Since 1981, Iowa Student Loan®, a private, nonprofit organization, has helped Iowa students and families obtain the resources necessary to succeed in postsecondary education. Iowa Student Loan has helped more than 375,000 students pay for college. The organization, based in West Des Moines, Iowa, also provides an array of borrower benefits, financial literacy tools and community reinvestment programs, including support for free college planning services for students and their families.

Iowa Student Loan creates programs to recognize those who serve in need areas in Iowa. These programs reward those who, through their career choices, lessen the shortage of workers in these areas.

Iowa Student Loan Nurse Educator Grant Program

The program helps graduate-level nursing students who are also teaching in a classroom or clinical setting in Iowa.

New recipients will receive up to $1,500 per academic term, up to a maximum of $3,000 per academic year.

Past recipients awarded at least one Iowa Student Loan Nurse Educator Grant before July 1, 2013, will receive up to $2,000 per academic term, up to a maximum of $4,000 per academic year.

Awards may be renewed. Eligible individuals may receive up to two full awards over two academic years, not to exceed a full award amount within a single academic year.

The program is open to all eligible nursing education students. Applicants are not required to have loans owned or serviced by Iowa Student Loan or to have graduated from an Iowa college or university.

Recipients of an Iowa Student Loan Nurse Educator Grant must be teaching at or in partnership with an eligible Iowa college or university nursing program while pursing their graduate-level program. Please visit for further details and to obtain the current application.

Iowa Student Loan Nursing Education Loan Forgiveness Program

The loan forgiveness program was created to provide recruitment and retention incentives in the form of education loan forgiveness for nursing educators and registered nurses (RNs) in Iowa communities. Applications are not being accepted for the Iowa Student Loan Nursing Education Loan Forgiveness Program. Previously approved loan forgiveness program applicants should visit to better understand and request benefits.

Nurse Corps Loan Repayment Program  (NELRP)

All NELRP participants must enter into a contract agreeing to provide full-time service at an approved Critical Shortage Facility (CSF) for two years. In return, the NELRP will pay 30 percent of the participant's total qualifying loan balance each year (total of 60 percent). A participant may be eligible to amend his/her two-year NELRP Contract to serve for a third (optional) year at a CSF. If a participant works full-time for a third year in a CSF, the NELRP will pay an additional 25 percent of the participant's original qualifying loan balance.

Nurse Corps Scholarship Program (NCSP)

In exchange for at least two years service at a health care facility with a critical shortage of nurses, the Nursing Scholarship Program pays for tuition, required fees other reasonable costs, including required books, clinical supplies, laboratory expenses, etc. monthly stipend.

Iowa College Aid Commission

The Registered Nurse and Nurse Educator Loan Forgiveness Program is a state-funded program that will provide student loan repayment assistance to Iowa Nurse Educators and Registered Nurses repaying Federal Stafford Loans – Subsidized and Unsubsidized. This program is designed to increase the number of Nurse Educators and Registered Nurses in the state of Iowa.
Eligible Applicants are:
  • Nurse educators who hold master’s, specialists, or doctorate degrees and are employed by eligible Iowa colleges or universities; or registered nurses who are employed as nurses in Iowa.
  • First employed as nurse educators or registered nurses in Iowa no earlier than July 1, 2007.
